But Love I Can't Explain
Enboldened by the
Double Entendres he has been drinking, Sidney joins Jessica who is sitting alone
at her table. Wally, forever cynical, is amazed that these two could so
quickly become enamored of each other, and tells Charlie that love is beyond his comprehension. Charlie thinks
that Wally might be a little jealous. Wally confesses
in song that "I
know lots of facts...BUT LOVE I CAN'T EXPLAIN", as Charlie tries to
steer him in a more positive direction.
(Partial lyrics)
WALLY
(Proudly)
I KNOW LOTS OF FACTS,
AND THIS CLEVER BRAIN (Points to his head)
DOES YOUR INCOME TAX, (Points to Charlie)
BUT LOVE - I CAN’T EXPLAIN.
CHARLIE (Spoken)
Wally
it's not about up there (Points to Wally’s head), it’s about what’s
in there
(Points to Wally’s
heart)
WALLY
I’VE GOT LOTS OF HEART, (Points to himself)
CAN’T YOU UNDERSTAND?
BUT, WHY - HAVE SUPPLY, (Shrugs)
WHEN THERE IS NO DEMAND?
CHARLIE (Spoken)
OK - so you’ve got a lot of heart. Now just get out
there and tell some gal how you feel!
WALLY
I CAN'T SAY THE THINGS
WOMEN LIKE TO HEAR.
WORDS LIKE SWEETIE-PIE
TRUE LOVE AND HONEY BEAR.
CHARLIE (Spoken) C’mon professor –
they’re just cute little words of affection. Y’know I’m really worried about
you.
WALLY
THANKS FOR YOUR CONCERN.
BUT QUESTIONS STILL REMAIN.
WORDS I UNDERSTAND,
BUT LOVE - I CAN’T EXPLAIN.
WALLY AND THE JAKETTES
THANKS FOR YOUR CONCERN.
BUT QUESTIONS STILL REMAIN.
WORDS I UNDERSTAND,
BUT LOVE - I CAN’T EXPLAIN.
WALLY
BUT LOVE .. I CAN’T... EXPLAIN.
